Economic Development Planning

I'm an agency or organization interested in economic development planning

The Institute for Economic Development and its various centers and programs provide a broad range of technical, research, information, and training capabilities to assist agencies, communities, local governments, economic development districts and regional planning organizations such as councils of governments engaged in economic development planning. These capabilities include the following:

  • Economic Base Studies
  • Shift-Share Analysis
  • Locational Analysis
  • Economic Impact Studies
  • Trade Area Analysis
  • Retail Trade/Market Studies
  • Project Feasibility Studies
  • Community Needs Assessment
  • Regional Cluster Analysis
  • Strategic Planning

The Institute has extensive, in-house research databases, and a GIS capability to map data elements at the local, regional, state and national levels. As need dictates, it is also able to draw on both faculty and non-faculty consultants to obtain specific kinds of expertise not available within the Institute to help agencies and organizations with their economic development research and planning requirements.

The Institute is currently engaged in several projects and studies that focus on economic development planning. For example, it is conducting a comprehensive retail trade analysis and planning study for the City of Windcrest. It has also completed a composite economic base profile and analysis for Frio County. In addition, Institute staff is working with Solar San Antonio, Inc. to develop a renewable energy strategy to foster a sustainable economy in the South Texas region. Over the years the IED has worked on hundreds of economic development projects throughout the State of Texas.
