Institute’s International Trade Center to Receive 2014 SBDC of the Year Award

Institute’s Robert McKinley Appointed to State Small-Business Assistance Advisory Task Force

(March 24, 2014) Gov. Rick Perry has appointed UTSA Associate Vice President for Economic Development Robert McKinley to serve as a member of the Office of Small Business Assistance Advisory Task Force. The task force advises and assists the Office of Small Business Assistance, governor, lieutenant governor and speaker with issues that relate to small businesses, and provides information in plain language to the public on issues related to small businesses. Since 2003, McKinley has led the UTSA Institute for Economic Development with a portfolio of a dozen centers and programs that provide business training, consulting and research to more than 38,000 clients annually across the South Texas border region. UTSA Institute for Economic Development Reports $1.6 billion in Economic Impact

(Feb. 13, 2014) Clients of The University of Texas at San Antonio Institute for Economic Development generated $1.6 billion in business growth during fiscal year 2013 including $1.26 billion in increased sales, contracts and exports and $350 million in new capital. Institute for Economic Development conducts research report for West Texas Energy Consortium

(December 12, 2013) The UTSA Institute for Economic Development Center for Community and Business Research was contracted by the West Texas Energy Consortium (WTxEC) to estimate the economic impacts of the oil and gas industry on certain counties in the Consortium in the year 2012, and to create a forecast for the year 2022. The Consortium area consist of the Concho Valley, West Central Texas, and Permian Basin regions. The study focuses on a core 10-county area within the WTxEC, and explores drilling information as well as economic impacts for them. These counties are Fisher, Glasscock, Howard, Irion, Martin, Mitchell, Nolan, Reagan, Scurry, and Sterling. UTSA Hosts Delegations for Brazil’s Micro and Small Business Support Service

(October 30, 2013) The UTSA Institute for Economic Development hosted a delegation from the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE) in an effort to exchange knowledge and information as well as learn more about how U.S. Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) work. SEBRAE is a Brazilian small business development institution, created in 1972. The institution counts on a network of 27 regional offices in all Brazilian states along with nearly 800 service units. In September of 2012, UTSA signed a memorandum of understanding with SEBRAE, which set the tone for the onsite visit in 2013. In addition to the MOU, the Institute for Economic Development also executed an agreement with Brazil’s Small Business Agency and SEBRAE, which will launch in November of 2013, and will formally link 1.1

UTSA Hosts Delegation from the Inter-American Development Bank to Discuss SBDC Model

(October 11, 2013)The International Trade Center at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Institute of Economic Development announced today that it hosted a three-day visit by Inter-American Development Bank delegates. The visit provided an opportunity to demonstrate the work that the Institute and its centers are doing to create economic impact in Texas and internationally. Institute for Economic Development Offers Global Business Training

(September 30, 2013) As part of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) annual conference, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Institute for Economic Development (IED) provided a three-day training preparing MBDA staff to take the NASBITE Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) test. CGBP training is divided into five modules that help prepare participants to sit for the CGBP exam. The CGBP is an internationally recognized certification for professionals in the United States and Mexico and confirms knowledge in international trade and assures that certified participants are able to practice global business at the professional level required in today’s competitive environment.
