U.S. Small Business Administration Honors UTSA Small Business Development Center

(May 31, 2013) The San Antonio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has received a pair of 2013 U.S. Small Business Administration Region VI SBDC Excellence and Innovation Awards. The awards were presented to the SBDC at the district and regional levels.

The San Antonio SBDC is a part of the South-West Texas Border SBDC Network and the UTSA Institute for Economic Development. It is one of the largest and most established centers within the network. It serves 10 counties surrounding San Antonio including Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, Medina and Wilson.

As a leader in small-business development, the San Antonio SBDC offers advising, training and research to help small-business owners and entrepreneurs start, develop and grow their businesses. In 2012, the SBDC served more than 5,300 businesses and provided training to more than 3,900 participants while assisting clients in obtaining more than $54 million in capital. This capital infusion resulted in the creation of 1,081 new jobs and the retention of 991 existing jobs in San Antonio and the surrounding communities.

For 50 years, National Small Business Week has recognized the special impact made by entrepreneurs, small-business owners and organizations that champion small businesses.

Morrison Woods, director of the San Antonio SBDC, said, “It is an honor for me to accept this award on behalf of the entire SBDC staff. This award would not have been possible without their dedication to fostering the success of small businesses.”

“Your success is a testament to the enduring drive of America’s entrepreneurs and to the power of small business to change lives and transform communities,” said Yolanda Garcia Olivarez, U.S. Small Business Administration Region VI regional administrator.
