In 35 years, America’s Small Business Development Center has grown from a small pilot program to a nationwide business education and training infrastructure with nearly 1,000 centers throughout the nation providing management and technical assistance to over a million Americans annually.
Charles Tee Rowe, President of Americans SBDC said, “America’s small businesses are truly the engine of economic growth, and for 35 years, America’s SBDC has been like the spark plugs keeping the engine going.”
With the assistance of SBDCs, a new business is opened every 33 minutes with a new job being created every 7 minutes. As a part of the America’s SBDC family, UTSA’s South-West Texas Border SBDC and partner affiliate Network serves a 79-county region in Texas through 10 strategically located field offices.

UTSA’s South-West Texas Border (SWTXB) SBDC Network took part in the America’s SBDC 35-year celebration in San Francisco and was honored by Maria Contreras-Sweet, the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Contreras-Sweet presented the SWTXB SBDC Network with a medal and a certificate for its service. Network Executive Director, Albert Salgado received the official recognition of the partnership.
“It was an honor to receive recognition from the SBA Administrator on behalf of all the many dedicated business professionals that help grow the Texas economy every day,” Salgado said.
Last year, the Network helped small business clients create over 6,000 jobs, access over $241M of financing, generate over $41M of tax revenue to the Texas economy, with a benefit-to-cost of $8.91 to every public dollar expended to small business growth. “We are proud of our University partners, the State of Texas, and the SBA for helping grow the Texas Economy one-business at a time” said Salgado.
